Do you have a goal? And does it matter?
Many of us think we have goals in life, but we really don’t. Very few abuzz have a solid, realistic goal. Oh, of course, we all have those wonderful goals such as “I want to make millions and be rich”, or “I want to change the world and make it a better place”, but those aren’t real goals. Those are just a general direction. You need an actual goal to target towards, they can have actual steps that you can take moving towards it. If you don’t have a realistic and point, then the path you take will not be a straight one, it will meander all over and you will lose focus and life will be a lot harder. That’s not to say that your goal has to be a difficult one, as long as it’s a recognizable goal that’s all that matters.
People have said many times that the journey is more important than the destination, and this is very true, but if you don’t know what your destination is then you don’t have a good journey. You don’t know which way to go, or what steps to take, or even what direction. What you do in your life as you move toward your goal is what’s important, as that is what your life is. The goal is not your life, the destination is not your life, the journey through life to get to those destinations is what is your life. That is who you are, and that is how you judge yourself, as well as how others will judge you.
Having a clear destination, even if it’s a short-term one or long term one, will make life a lot less stressful. When you are in doubt of what to do, all you have to do is look at what your goal is again and adjust your steps. Think of it as being lost in a great forest. There’s a mountain in the far distance, and much much closer as a giant tree. Your goal may be the mountain, but your short-term goal might be the tree. If you keep your eye on both of those and keep moving forward towards them, you will get there eventually. If you have neither a short-term or long-term goal, you will just wander around in the forest lost aimlessly and never get anywhere.
It doesn’t really matter if you never reach your goal, but the fact is you need to have a goal. If you never reach your goal that’s okay, as long as you keep moving towards it with good faith, your life is much more structured and happy. You are making positive steps. You will have no regrets that you didn’t do things you should’ve done because everything you need to do is on the path towards where you are chosen. Having said that, make sure that the destination is your destination and not the destination that someone else thinks she should be going to. This is your life you choose your path. If you let someone else choose your path, you may be happy for a while but in the long run, it will bring you nothing but sadness and regret.
So what happens when you reach your goal? This is one of the easier answers. When you reach your goal, you create another one. Hopefully, when you will reach your first goal, you will have learned a lot more about yourself, and be able to make a better more focused second goal. And when you reach the second goal you make the third goal. So you see in the real world, you never reach your destination. For every mountain you reach, there is another mountain behind it that’s bigger.
So does it matter if you have a goal? Absolutely! It doesn’t matter what the goal is? Not particularly. As long as that goal is something that you want, and improve your life, and hopefully make the world a better place, then you’re all good. The journey is the thing, but with any journey, you have a start and end, and you need to know which way to go. So let’s take that journey to a more fantastic place, and make a more fantastic world.
